You can start flying lessons at the age of 14, and at age 17, you can hold a pilot's license for aeroplanes and/or helicopters.

You can book flying lessons directly on this website. However, before being granted access to the direct booking facility, you must first become a member of Phoenix Flight Training. To become a member, please complete the form on the Contact Page to arrange a meeting at Phoenix Flight Training, located at Cumbernauld Airport. You pay for your flying lessons in person after each lesson.

A license, once granted, remains valid indefinitely (barring any enforcement action). But you need more than just a license to fly. To use your license while flying solo, you also need a Medical Certificate (if required by the aircraft or flight rules) and a Current BFR (Biennial Flight Review). Medical Certificates are good for five years until you’re 40, then for two years. They require a quick trip to an FAA-approved doctor to examine you for any obvious medical conditions. A BFR is a review with an instructor every two years to ensure you’re still proficient and safe. If all goes well, the process takes approximately 90 minutes.

For a Personal Pilot’s License, you need a Class 2 medical certificate. To apply for a Class 2 medical certificate, you must have a medical examination by an Aeromedical Examiner (AME). If you meet the medical requirements, the AME will issue your certificate. To book your examination, you must make an appointment directly with an AME. Use our AME search to find one near you. An AME is a specially qualified doctor certificated to issue UK medical certificates to pilots. Validity period The validity of a Class 2 medical certificate depends on your age at the time of examination. If you are under 40, the certificate will be valid for 60 months. Please note that if you are issued a Class 2 medical before reaching 40, it will no longer be valid once you reach 42. If you are between 40 and 50 years old, the certificate will be valid for 24 months. Please note that if you are issued a Class 2 medical before reaching 50, it will no longer be valid once you reach 51. If you are aged 50 or over, the certificate will be valid for 12 months.

The minimum requirements for a LAPL are: Minimum 30 hours of training, of which 15 must be dual. Six hours of supervised solo time, including at least 3 hours of solo cross-country and a qualifying solo cross-country flight of at least 80 nautical miles with one full stop landing at an airfield other than the departure airfield. Pass 9 CAA Ground exams. PASS a class 2 medical. Pass a test with a CAA examiner. Hold a LAPL or class 2 medical. The minimum requirements for the UK CAA Private Pilot Licence are: A minimum of 45 hours of training, of which at least 10 hours must be supervised solo time. Minimum 25 hours dual. A qualifying solo cross-country flight of at least 150nm with two full-stop landings at two other airfields. Pass nine ground exams. Obtain a class 2 medical. Pass a flight test with a CAA examiner.
